Help End Period Poverty

Help End Period Poverty

Inspired by Lidl’s timely and impressive initiative in partnership with Homeless Period Ireland to provide free period products to customers, we will follow this fine example and provide our staff and customers at all of our venues with free products as soon as we reopen.

Like all good initiatives, it has potential to encourage awareness and positive change, which is why we are supporting it.

We have reached out to Homeless Period Ireland and have committed to making donations and to growing our support for this Important initiative.

Let’s talk about it. Period.

  • Period poverty is the lack of access to sanitary products, menstrual hygiene education, toilets, hand washing facilities, and/or waste management. Homeless Period Ireland and the Simon Communities say it is a growing issue in Ireland, particularly since the onset of the pandemic.
  • “National data on poverty rates and numbers participating in social protection schemes would suggest that approximately 53,000-85,000 women and girls may be at risk of period poverty.”
  • Other countries such as Scotland and New Zealand have already introduced policies to increase the availability and affordability of sanitary products and reports recommend that Ireland does what it can to reduce the risk of period poverty.

  • Homeless Period Ireland collects donations of free sanitary products (pads / tampons / wipes / incontinence pads / maternity pads) from a number of drop-off points throughout Ireland and distributes them via volunteer drivers to homeless shelters, direct provision centres and food banks. The smartphone app Easho was used as a direct order system during the Covid-19 pandemic.
